Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld is widely considered to be one of the greatest German painters of the 19th century. He is known for his religious paintings and his skillful use of color and light.
Schnorr von Carolsfeld was born in Leipzig in 1794. He began his artistic career as a young boy, studying at the Academy of Leipzig under the direction of Johann Hirt and Johann Heinrich Meyer. He went on to study at the Royal Academy of Arts in Dresden, where he was greatly influenced by the works of 18th century masters such as Anton Raphael Mengs and Johann Zoffany.
The majority of Schnorr von Carolsfeld’s works were religious in nature. He painted several scenes from the Bible, including the Transfiguration, the Marriage at Cana, and the Last Supper. He also painted a number of portraits, including those of King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia and the Empress Josephine. His work was praised for its skillful use of color, light, and composition.
Schnorr von Carolsfeld is perhaps best known for his illustrations for the Bible. In 1827, he was commissioned to paint a series of biblical scenes for a new edition of the Bible. His work was praised for its attention to detail and its adherence to scripture. He also illustrated the works of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller.
Schnorr von Carolsfeld’s work was highly regarded during his lifetime and he had a lasting influence on later painters, such as Adolph von Menzel and Carl Spitzweg. His works are still highly valued by art collectors and can be found in museums and galleries around the world.
